A Night to Remember!

Wednesday 9th August was our Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest Meeting. It was a great night enjoyed by all present and was not to be missed!

The Table Topic Question “Our House is our Castle” was well handled by all contestants – Aaron Ross, Judy Mugonya, Rachel Segal and Ursula Nirmala Herulah. It was wonderful to see this mix of experienced and newer members taking on the challenge and lapping it up! Our winner was Aaron Ross, with a well balanced and expressive presentation, with Rachel Segal in second place. Congratulations Aaron Ross!

There was a certain theme which seemed to be part and parcel of all our three Humorous Speeches – to find this out one could attend our next meeting 😊 . It seems that Aaron Ross, Iqbal Singh and Phillip Agripanidis must have got together before the contest and compared notes! 😊 It provided some very entertaining and interesting plots for us! Aaron Ross prevailed again and is therefore our double champion, representing us in both contests at the Area 24 Contest on 31st August. Go Aaron Ross!

The contests were ably chaired by Margrit Fisher, with Chief Judge being our Area 24 Director Dave Egan. Contest Toastmasters were Giuseppe Toscan (President of Skyline Speakers TM) for Table Topics and Rachel Segal for the Humorous Speech Contest. A night to remember!

A retrospective..

Last Wednesday we enjoyed a “Remember when” themed meeting, with Sussana helping give the night a ‘retrospective’ touch with an on-theme Table Topics impromptu speaking session, and word-of-the-day too.

Aaron delivered a truly enlightening educational on ‘Humour in speeches’, reminding us all that we don’t have to be comedians to be effective at inserting humour when we speak! And boy is that a relief!

We were treated to two very different prepared speeches – a dramatic account of a holiday near-disaster by Iqbal, followed by Judy helping us reflect on the influential people in our lives.

The meeting was expertly chaired by Aaron, with Victor, Ursula, Rufina, Phillip and Yooree helping the agenda run smoothly with many of the smaller but vital roles throughout the meeting. We were later joined by special guests Margrit & David, which provided a very timely point of humour for the meeting. Also wonderful to see Bram back in the room after some time away from Sydney.

Our next meeting is Wednesday 9 August, which will include our club’s Humorous Speech and Table Topics contests. I’m looking forward to seeing our members step up to the contest stage and give it a go! Remember, every speaking opportunity is the chance to improve our skills, and we only learn by doing!

As always, visitors are very welcome to this next meeting, simply get in touch to let us know you’ll be joining us.

See you there

Belinda

Looking back at a recent meeting..

From the incoming Vice President Public Relations, David:

It was a great night last night at Sydney Speakers for our Changeover Dinner & Meeting. Wonderful having both our Lachlan Division Director Mitsie and Area 24 Director Dave at our meeting. Both inspired us and gave us direction, and most humble with it. It is wonderful to have such dedicated Division & Area Directors to support us! It’s going to be a fantastic year.

We have now been inducted into the new year and it has started with a bang! Some very thought-provoking Table Topics from Aaron, a wonderful speech from Belinda about the committee in our heads and from Aaron on the Larson C Glacier come Iceberg, a Toast to change from Michael Fatouris and a lot of fun!

Judy tested our listening with rewards of snickers bars (bring them on!) and Taban explained what to do for ums & errs. Great addresses from incoming President Margrit, Mitsie and Dave, wrapped up with constructive feedback from Victor and Sammy for Table Topics and Phillip and Mitsie for our speeches, as well as Dave as Master Evaluator.

Rachel emceed the speeches as only Rachel could do and Iqbal provided us with some fitting humour to bring us back after the main course.

An enjoyable meal had by one and all and wonderful fellowship between segments. I vote we do it again next year!

We welcome guests at every meeting – let us know so we can expect you!

A warm ‘winter’ themed meeting

A quick wrap up of last week’s meeting (14 June 2017)..

With the theme of ‘winter’ at Wednesday’s meeting, we had a warm and inviting room, with a few guests in attendance too. Table topics were set to the winter theme, thanks to Victor, giving us a chance to practice our speaking skills and share our differing opinions on cold weather!

The agenda included a delightful mix of prepared speeches, including a technical presentation by David – cleverly and seamlessly using internet-based demonstrations live in his speech. We learnt about brave animals who served in war time (thanks Michael), and how being attached to our phone screens is truly bad for our backs (thanks for the education Margrit).

We welcomed new members Joao and Sussana, and also congratulated Ursula on reaching the “five speech” milestone. Well done Ursula.

Our next meeting is this Wednesday 28 June – visitors are welcome. Simply get in touch and let us know so we can expect you.

Also, we have a special ‘committee changeover’ meeting on Wednesday 5 July, where we celebrate the outgoing committee’s achievements and welcome the new executive. Guests are welcome – please RSVP in advance for this meeting as there are special dinner arrangements being made.
